From Accidental to Intentional: Birth of a Street Photographer

At some point, I stopped waiting for people to move out of my shot so that I could get a good picture, and started waiting for a person to move INTO my frame for an even better and more interesting photo.

Each day of our lives is filled with teeny tiny moments - gestures, glances, expressions, movements big & small. A multitude of these these micro events make up one single day in the life of a human creature. It’s rare that any one of them is remembered, much less celebrated, but they are the stuff of life. Street photography makes art of these normally forgotten moments.

Through street photography I’ve learned to pay attention these little details, loosen my perfectionist tendencies, and get spontaneous. There remain elements of composition to consider: viewpoint, lines, shapes, and visual tension, to name several. But the reasons for the photographs are the raw, candid moments of the everyman/everywoman. Perfection is no longer required. In fact, try to be perfect and the shot will be missed.

I love how something as innocuous as a handshake or a moment of repose can take on a new level of interest and meaning when singled out in a photograph. My work is about capturing such fleeting moments, and making non-special events special by placing attention on them.
